Birth control and your libido

Many people experience a loss of sex drive or sexual appetite, which is also referred to as libido.  Such a reduction in libido is a common dysfunction that can be treated medically.  There are numerous causes for a reduction in libido, it can sometimes be because of a decrease in natural hormones- testosterone in men and estrogen in women.  Some birth control methods such as the contraceptive pill have also shown to cause a reduction in libido in some women.

Birth control comes in various forms and types, but typically there are more options available for women.  This means that a reduced libido is more common in women as women typically use contraceptive methods more.

The majority of women rely on the contraceptive pill.  There are many different types that these can come in, and each pill can have different side effects.  After the contraceptive pill, the next most commonly used method for women is an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD).  This affects different women’s libido in different ways, some women have very subtle libido reductions whereas other women feel a total reduction in their libido, resulting in them having almost no desire for sexual activity.

IUD can have many side effects from bleeding to painful periods.  This has a very negative effect on a woman’s libido, as well as reducing desire the increased pain makes sexual activity incredibly uncomfortable and many women prefer to refrain from sexual activity altogether.  However, many women experience no changes in libido whatsoever with IUD.
The contraceptive pill is another very popular form of contraception.  These pills often reduce a woman’s libido since hormonal changes in a woman’s body can take place.  However many women use the contraceptive pill and experience no reduction in libido and continue to have a healthy sex life.

For men, condoms or a vasectomy are the two typical methods of contraception.  However, both of these usually have no effect on a man’s libido and their sexual desire and activity often remains the same after using such contraceptive methods.
